You Can Go “Too Far” With Augments In Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt Red is giving a lot of details on what their world and characters of Cyberpunk 2077 are going to be like. As well as the decisions that you will have to make in the city the game is set in. But for them, a big thing that players can do is augment their characters with more and more machine parts so that they are not so much human as they cybernetic. And while this may be alluring to many, CD Projekt Red warns that there is a catch to this.
During an interview with EDGE Magazine, Quest Designer Patrick Mills warns of “cyberpsychosis”, which will happen when you make yourself more machine than man in order to escape the problems of the world:
“All the travails of the flesh fade away, and you become a perfect machine of chrome. But you had to buy those body parts from someone, and now you’re in debt to them; if you need parts, you’ve got to go to their store. You have this very utopian idea of being liberated by technology. And it’s like, not so fast–you haven’t solved the problems. The problems are still there, and technology actually makes them worse. ‘High tech, low life’ is one of Mike’s [Pondsmith, Cyberpunk 2020 creator] mottos.”
So it appears as though the team are working hard to ensure that absolutely every single action you have in the game has a consequence that you have to deal with, including how you augment your own character. And this only scratches the surface of what Cyberpunk 2077 is offering in terms of choices, abilities, upgrades, quests, and more.
It will be very interesting to see what other choices and mechanics will be revealed as time goes on. The game is still in development now, so more reveals are assured for the future.
