Will Future Paradox Games Be Free-to-play?
If you are familiar with Paradox, then you know that they are amazing developers that make really great games and then sell 300 pieces of DLC. We are kidding, of course, but we wouldn’t be surprised if one of their games had that many, as they have unusually high amounts of purchasable downloadable content for their games, such as Europa Universalis IV and others. In a Gamesindustry.biz article, they talked about a lot of things, especially about the huge number of DLCs that most of their game have, and if they are experimenting with new business models, like the most popular one, the free-to-play.
You see, when you look at most Paradox games, titles like Crusader Kings II, Cities: Skylines, Hearts of Iron IV, and so on, they all came out one or more years ago. Some of them have even come out three years ago, but they still receive DLC every now and then. Why is that? Well, the people over at Paradox found this to be a safe way of making money, so who could blame them for doing it? But even they noticed that right now, the best business model is the free-to-play one, and they may even adopt such a business model later on. They said:
“If we could simultaneously have different ways of paying that would make people happy, we would do that,” he said. “But we don’t have the data, and we don’t know how that would play out… I don’t think we have anything particularly against a free-to-play grand strategy game. We just have no idea how that would do.”
They talked about a lot of things, and you can check the entire interview over at gamesindustry.biz and see what they had to say about all of this.
