A recent interview with IGN gave us some hints as to why Half-Life 3 is still a game that we can only dream of.
Developing a game and an engine at the same time isn’t easy
When you want to make a game, first you need a technology which will help create said game. Half-Life 2 was in some sort of development hell. Not the usual kind, no. It was more of a struggle as the game was being developed alongside the Source engine. Dario Casali, the level designer, shared all of this with us in an IGN interview. That’s why the episodic release happened. However, the highly anticipated Episode 3 never came. Why? The development team was too ambitious for their own good. They kept adding in the feature after feature. It’s good in practice to make your game full of complex mechanics. But, seems like that became a curse rather than a blessing.
More Half-Life is on the way
Valve has been working on a lot of Half-Life projects. They just weren’t happy with any of the. And Gabe said that they don’t want to release Half-Life games just to make money. Half-Life: Alyx is a project that they’re happy with. Of course, it’s a VR title, But it also means that Valve is ready to return to the franchise. Now the have the technology and the ideas needed to continue the Half-Life franchise, so should we expect Half-Life 3? Well, we are getting more Half-Life titles. We just don’t know if we’re getting sequels or more spin-offs. Alyx has Overwhelmingly Positive user reviews on Steam, so Valve didn’t miss the mark with that one.
All we can now do is wait. Wait for the day they announce Half-Life 3.
