Valve Walking Back Threats To Take Down NSFW Steam Games

Yesterday, we reported that a weird string of notices were being given to certain video game developers who had their games on Steam. Basically, titles in the Visual Novel genre that were viewed as NSFW because they featured nudity and were “interpreted” as having more than that were either threatened to be taken down, or were warned that their games were about to be taken down. This upset a lot of people, not just the developers, but gamers who not only liked these games, but were angry that other non-Visual Novel titles weren’t getting the same notice.

After all, while many of these NSFW titles do indeed have nudity and suggestive content, so do other AAA titles on Steam, one of the biggest ones being Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which features nudity for both male and female characters, as well as love-making scenes. Yet, CD Projekt Red didn’t get a warning.

Fast forward to late yesterday, and all the developers who got warnings about their Steam games got an update on the situation. Here’s what a tweet from developer HunieDev on the situation:

I have just received word from Valve apologizing for the confusion, saying to DISREGARD their previous e-mail about the violation, that they are in the process of re-reviewing the game and will follow up soon.

The other devs got a similar tweet. Now, here’s the catch, look at the wording of the tweet. While it does say that Valve backtracked a bit in regards to immediately taking the game down, the company said that they are “re-reviewing” the game. Which means they’re still potentially going to censor it. Whether they do or not is still up in the air, but it is possible.

This is a very important situation, as this could swing either way, we’ll keep you posted as it develops.
