Undertale Coming To Nintendo Switch, Game Engine To Be Available To Others
Yesterday was a day that many Nintendo fanboys and fangirls were waiting for: the day a new Nintendo Direct arrived. And this Direct brought big news of many levels. Some new surprises, some new reveals, and a few interesting additions to the Nintendo Switch’s game lineup. But, what might have surprised many the most was that the hit game from 2015, Undertale, was revealed to be coming to the console…eventually. Their words, not ours. But now, we know that it won’t just be the game, but the game’s engine that’s coming.
Confused? Allow us to explain. Developer YoYo Games is going to make it so that developers can use the GameMaker Studio 2 in order to create and export games from the engine to the Nintendo Switch. This is a big deal, as this will be yet another avenue for indie titles (and maybe AAA titles) to be made for the Nintendo Switch. Aside from Undertale, other respected titles that came from the engine include Hyper Light Drifter.
Apparently, allowing other indie game developers to bring their titles to the Switch via the engine was the intention of Yoyo Games’ General Manager James Cox, for he said in a statement:
“Nintendo has been hugely supportive of bringing independent releases to the Nintendo Switch console. We’re working hard to ensure the Nintendo Switch version of GameMaker Studio 2 retains the already excellent functionality of the engine.”
The company is also excited to have their title Undertale available for more gamers to play. And why not? The game was a renown hit when it arrived, surprising everyone with its depth, charm, freedom, and more. It earned many perfect scores from various sites and platforms, which is no small feat for an indie game.
Now, we don’t know when it’ll come to the Nintendo Switch exactly, but it’s coming, and that means something.
