Ubisoft Head Believes There Will Be Only One More Console Generation
In the video game industry, you either evolve, or you die. But more importantly than that, you have to evolve in the right way, or you’ll fail. Knowing where to take the next generation of consoles and video games has been a focal point of many success and failures.Case and point, the jumps between the Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch. However, in the mind of one CEO of a major game developer, the time of consoles is reaching an end. This comes from the head of Ubisoft himself.
That’s right, Yves Guillemot believes that consoles are coming to an end. What’s more, he thinks they’ll be coming to an end in the next generations
“I think we will see another generation, but there is a good chance that step-by-step we will see less and less hardware,” Guillemot told Variety. “With time, I think streaming will become more accessible to many players and make it not necessary to have big hardware at home. There will be one more console generation and then after that, we will be streaming, all of us.”
It’s a bold statement, but one that is backed by recent trends. There was a time when digital gaming was considered impossible, and now it’s a standard way of gaming life. Furthermore, there have been attempts to stream games in the past, including a recent on with Resident Evil 7 in Japan.
The other question is one that has been asked for a while now of “who is evolving the most with their console generations?” And as Ubisoft would likely admit, that’s Nintendo. They’ve been trying to create new gameplay experiences while Microsoft and Sony are focused more on graphical upgrades.
So if Yves is right, then the next/last console generation will feature the Nintendo Switch, PS5, and the Xbox One X-2 (or whatever it’s called). Would you be fine with only one more console generation?
