Twitch’s New Currency System For Overwatch League Has Massive First Night
When Blizzard announced the Overwatch League, there were a lot of questions being asked. There were questions about teams, how the league itself would work, prizes, and of course, how people would view it. Well, just before the league officially started, Blizzard revealed an exclusive deal with Twitch to stream every single match in the league from the popular service. Twitch has been making the most of this opportunity and has brought in many viewers, but it’s also gone above that make the experience even more enjoyable.
How? Well, it recently announced a virtual currency system focused around league that could earn you items within Overwatch itself. For the services currency, Bits, could be bought and put into “Cheering” within the game, and the more you do so, the more in-game items you could get. The first night of this new system just happened, and Dot Esports reports that almost 10,000,000 Bits were bought and used last night.
To put that into round numbers for you, that means that around $120,000 was spent last night on Twitch during Overwatch League, give or take. Now, once players make it to 10,000,000 Bits put into the new system (which they’ll likely do very soon), they’ll earn one of the first rewards for the game.
Some of the things Twitch is offering via this new system is emotes and skins featuring teams in the league. What’s more, these items will be exclusive to this system for a little bit, so getting them now means you’ll have them before anyone else.
It’s fascinating to see the response to this new system on Twitch, it shows not only how popular (and trusted) Twitch is with its Bits system, but also, how into the league players are. You can chalk this up as another victory for Blizzard in many ways.
