The Sinking City is a Lovecraftian game which involves a lot of exploring, madness, and impressive architecture. Today, we will be talking about the buildings in the game and how they were made.
Unlike Call of Cthulhu, The Sinking City doesn’t focus a lot on the cosmic horror as much, and it gives you guns so that you can shoot the spooky creatures until they are spooky no more. Some people will like this, others will not, but whatever the case may be, we are here to talk about architecture. Yes, but not any architecture. See, making a huge open-world isn’t all that easy. Actually, it is quite a hard task that not many are up to. But, the people that are working on The Sinking City had a special idea. They created their own city builder tool in the Unreal Engine 4.
Katerina Frolova is one of the people that worked on this tool. She is a level designer as well as a trained architect. The tool she made lets you set a few urban planning variables into the tool. After that, you get to generate entire city districts in a matter of seconds. From what we’ve heard, a task like this usually lasts for weeks. Naturally, if you can do something in hours that normally takes weeks to do, you’re pretty lucky.
Oakmont, the city that we’ll get to explore in The Sinking City was made with this tool. That doesn’t mean much to us, as we want to try the game ourselves and then see if the level designs are impressive. You know, since randomly generated maps aren’t always that great.
