The Darwin Project Went Free-to-Play
The Darwin Project is a really interesting game, as it combines your typical survival game with a battle royal shooter and puts a game master in there to spice things up. Think something like the Hunger Games, it has that sort of feel to it, and it really makes it stand out from other popular battle royal titles out there. But, it hasn’t attracted a lot of people, since you have to buy the game to play it, as it isn’t a free-to-play title as a game like Fortnite, so the developers decided that they are going to make the game free-to-play as well.
Even though the title is really great and fun, certain regions just couldn’t build up a big enough player base, and your game is going to be dead if you don’t have a stable player base for a long time, so they did the most logical thing and launched the Darwin Project again as a free-to-play title. They stated in their Steam post:
“We’ve been fortunate to have a core community of players join us at a very early stage, with many still supporting us during Early Access, and the last thing we want to do is let those passionate players down. Lately, members of our community have reported longer queue times and difficulty finding matches in lesser populated servers. To bring in new players and maintain a level of activity that ensures players are able to get the most of out Darwin Project, we’ve decided to make it more accessible by removing the price tag.
If they figure out a good business model, they can still make a lot of money with their free-to-play transition. After all, this way the game becomes a lot more accessible, and a lot more people can try it.
