There are many fighting game franchises out there in the world, and each one has their own special style and substance to it. The Tekken franchise has often been known for its focus on martial arts techniques above all else. True, there are some characters who break this mold, but most fit into the realm of skilled fighters, no energy attacks needed. With the development of Tekken 7, Bandai Namco wanted to make the best fighting game experience they could, and they clearly succeeded.
We say this for two reasons. One, when it was released, critics praised the game as one of the deepest experiences they ever had. Between the characters, the modes, and the near infinite amount of ways that players could customize the game, there was a lot to do and love in Tekken 7. But, arguably, more importantly, the game has sold well. In an interview with 4Gamer, one of the Tekken team, Katsuhiro Harada, revealed that the game had sold over 3 million copies in 2017.
That’s very impressive for a fighting game, as many consider fighting game franchises to be very “niche” in the gaming community. Sure, they have a lot of esports tournaments, but that also is why this is thought, as you have to be “good” to play these games in their minds. And to be fair, you do need skill to be good at games like Tekken, else you’ll be button-mashing.
Getting back on point though, this is a huge win for the Tekken franchise, as it’s at times struggled to compete sales-wise with other big name fighting game series. But, Tekken 7 seems to be doing just fine, as the game has had two very successful DLC, including bringing in King of Fighters character Geese Howard, and the next one will bring in Noctis from Final Fantasy XV.
So yeah, we don’t think its success will stop anytime soon.
