Super Smash Bros Ultimate Is Continually Selling Out In Japan
For Nintendo Switch owners, many were counting down the days until Super Smash Bros Ultimate arrived. The fighting game title was known to be coming in some capacity, but they didn’t know when or how big it would get. Nintendo surprised many when they revealed that the title that would be Ultimate was not only coming out this year, it would be the biggest version of the game by far. And because they went that big, the sales of the game were extraordinary, especially in Japan.
The game in full sold over 5 million copies worldwide within its first three days of release (which many called its first “week” of sales). In Japan alone, the game sold 1.2 million copies during that time. But now, an update from various Japanese sites states that the game is still selling out, and they can’t keep the title on the shelves for very long. This was shown on Twitter with one store putting “sold out” stickers on pictures of Smash Bros Ultimate.
Another report states that in Japan, the game has now sold over 2 million units between physical and digital copies. Which makes it the best-selling Smash Bros game even in Japan. Quite a feat. And given that it’s selling out now three weeks after its release on Switch, it likely means that this number is only going to get higher.
Given that 800,000 more units were sold in Japan since the initial 3 day numbers, that guarantees that Smash Bros Ultimate is over 6 million sold, and is likely very close to 7 million sold in less than a month. The record is held by Super Smash Bros Brawl, which sold over 13 million in its lifetime on the Nintendo Wii.
With the positive word of mouth, and the hype around DLC characters like Joker from Persona 5, it seems fair to guess that Super Smash Bros Ultimate will soon be the sales champion of the Smash Bros series.
