The airborne follow-up to Sunless Seas, Sunless Skies, is getting an update to its combat mechanics. The game is still in Early Access, but it shows a lot of promise already.
Sunless Seashttps was a game with extraordinary world building and exceptional writing. The only problem it had was its combat, which was rather lackluster and awkward. With their next game, Sunless Skies, the developers are working on improving such elements. For example, the enemy behavior in-game will be telegraphed. What does this mean exactly? Well, for instance, when an enemy ship is about to attack, you’re going to have auditory and visual cues which will let you know you’re in danger. When you encounter a powerful enemy, you will get indicators that they’re going to unleash something dangerous. This means that you can then get the hell out of there before their attack lands and obliterates you.
Sunless Skies players can also look forward to Aura Attacks. These are new Agent abilities that produce a large area of effect. If you get caught up in one of these, well, you will get terrified and most probably damaged.
We also got some new ramming mechanics, so to say. Agents now have three ramming stages, and those are Preparation, Acceleration, and Collision. Basically, they stay in place while aiming for you, then they shoot out like a bullet in order to hit you, and if they do, well, you and your crew are going to feel it. The game even got some new knockback and recoil effects to give a tiny bit of realism to Sunless Skies.
