Street Fighter is by far one of the most legendary and respected fighting game franchises in the world. Its influence inspired games like Mortal Kombat and other key fighting game franchises. Its popularity spawned movies (bad ones, but they still happened), animated shows and films (some good, some bad), appearances in other video games, and even the direct creation of another key fighting franchise in Marvel vs. Capcom. And for its latest game, Street Fighter V, the title has hit a major milestone.
As reported on Twitter (see below), the game has crossed the 2 million copies sold mark, and it’s apparently drawing closer to 2.5 million. Considering the game was released in February of 2016, that’s impressive. And, given that Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition is coming soon, it’s possible the sales of the title as a whole will rise through it.

All that being said, while 2 million is something to praise, that doesn’t mean that it’s a major success. In fact, the game was criticized when it first released due to the lack of content. For at launch, there wasn’t a VS. mode against the computer where players could train themselves, there wasn’t a story mode, and there wasn’t a feeling of true compilation. There were only 12 characters at launch (8 returning veterans and 4 newcomers), with the remain characters to be released via Season Pass, which many did not appreciate.
And while it’s true that Capcom did add the various new modes, and add a story (which got mixed reviews at best), some fans can’t help but think that Capcom shot themselves in the foot. In fact, they went back on their own word as proof of this. For when the game was announced, Capcom stated that there wouldn’t be another edition of the game, yet, the Arcade Edition is coming.
The question now is, how will the Arcade Edition do? And, will we get Street Fighter VI?
