Steam Founder’s Son Wants Valve To “Do Something Scary”
Valve is a lot of things to a lot of people. For some, they’re a game development team that has made some of the coolest PC titles in the last couple decades, including titles like Portal, Dota 2, Team Fortress, and of course, Half-Life. But, they’re also a major part of the video game industry in terms of business, as they’re the team behind Steam, one of the biggest gaming stores in the world. What’s more, Steam helps bring more indie game developers to the table by giving them a clearer path to publish their games.
Like we said, a lot of things to a lot of people, and a lot of people have ideas on what Valve should do next. This includes the son of the company’s founder, Gabe Newell. In an interview with Valve News Network, Gary Newell described what he felt the company should do next, and it may not be what you think.
“If it’s one thing I’d like to see Valve do, it’s push it with more their ideas,” he said. “The people there are the smartest I’ve ever met, the hardest working, the most inspiring. The culture at Valve is a very good one but they’ve kind of found this point where they’re a working machine. And that’s good, but I think they should reach out and do something scary. Do something that they don’t know what the outcome is going to be.
It is an interesting notion, and something that many are actually talking about now. For the company itself hasn’t released a true game in some time, and that’s got many scratching their heads. Now, obviously, everyone wants Half-Life 3 to be made, and finishing that might be “scary” because of the hype and anticipation, but maybe they need to do something else entirely. A new IP that can shake things up. They’ve done it before, why not again?
