Spyro Fan Game Shut Down By Activision
In the gaming world, there are rules, and one of the rules of that world is that you cannot make games that infringe on the copyright of a company. However, many gamers and fans have tried to circumvent this in many ways. Often by doing “fan games” that aren’t meant to make profit, but show what they would do with beloved franchises and characters. Some have been allowed to live, others haven’t. And now, Activision can add one Spyro the Dragon game to that list of ones that won’t live in their current form.
A gamer named Sebastian Chapman was working on a game called “Spyro: Myths Awaken”, and had been working on it for some time. And then, as Eurogamer reports, the lawyers from Activision stepped in and noted that the game must be shut down for legal reasons.
The biggest reason for this no doubt being the remastered trilogy that’s coming out very soon.
Chapman made the following statement about the situation:
“While we planned for something like this potentially happening, and built our game around this possibility, and will be continuing with our game on it’s own, separate from Spyro past this point, this is something to be cautious of for any other fan games out there with Spyro at the moment, or people thinking about doing Spyro fan games,” Chapman said.
“We now know Activisions stance on the matter and how it’ll likely go (I’m not trying to make a big statement about Activision or how this was handled etc., just relaying how it happened and what this means, so don’t take this any particular way),” he said.
On one hand, it’s not hard to see why Activision did this. On the other hand, it’s sad to see a project have to change form because of this. Still, Chapman aims to continue his game in another form, and if he puts as much dedication into it like he did with his Spyro game, it will likely be good.
