Spider-Man Sold 3.3 Million Copies In Opening Days
There was a time that superhero games (outside of fighting game mash-ups) were a big risk in the video game industry. Because for every good game, there were a bunch of clunkers. Batman Arkham Asylum and City helped change that. And then, a few years back, Insomniac revealed that they had a game in the works that was backed by Marvel and would feature Spider-Man. After much hype and anticipation, the game has now released. And reports are saying that it’s one of the biggest hits of the year so far.
According to Sony, in just the first three days of release, Spider-Man had around 3.3 million sales. That’s a very big number, and easily puts it on part with other big sellers this year like God of War, Far Cry 5, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and of course, Monster Hunter World.
Just as interesting is the fact that the game apparently had more pre-orders than God of War, and that game had big first week sales too.
Also impressive is that there was a special Spider-Man themed PS4 Pro Bundle that was made for the release, and those sold out near instantly. Add to that the games glowing reviews and you got a successful title from start to finish.
Insomniac worked really hard on the game, and Marvel gave them all the freedom they needed in order to create a title worth being as epic as they wanted it to be. And based on all the social media chatter on the game, they most definitely succeeded. Gamers have loved the freedom of flying around New York. Finding all of the Easter Eggs, getting all the suits for Spidey, completely all the challenges, and of course, the selfie mode.
The only question now is whether a sequel will be in the works. Given the sales, it’s very possible.
