Sonic Series Composer Talks Making Song For Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Super Smash Bros Ultimate is one of the most successful games of 2018, and one of the best-selling exclusive titles as well. But what made this game shine wasn’t just the vision of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, no, it was a combination of efforts from people all over the gaming world, and that including a large amount of composers from teams who weren’t fully under the Nintendo banner. Such as members of Platinum Games, and now recently revealed, a longtime member of Sonic Team, Tomoya Ohtani!
Ohtani has been a part of Sonic The Hedgehog for some time, but in a special column, he outlined how he got into Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and why he chose to make a Splatoon song of all things.
Now then, when I started work back in June it was kept a secret, but the truth is that I was chosen to oversee the arrangement of some of the Smash score. The song I oversaw was ‘Bomb Rush Blush’.
He went on to note:
I thought a lot about the song I wanted to work on, and however much I thought about it, the game that kept popping up my mind was Splatoon. Obviously liking the games from the Splatoon series was a factor, but as a modern game and one with many young fans, I really wanted to take on the challenge of attempting something new. Within Splatoon, though, there were a number of songs that I wanted to try, so I was at a bit of a loss. While listening to the soundtrack and, thinking about things like rhythm and BPM, I tried mixing several of the motifs.
He eventually went on to make “Bomb Rush Blush”, a song that was actually performed in Splatoon by the Squid Sisters, who actually made their debut in Ultimate as an Assist Trophy. Just goes to show how impressive Ultimate is with the people that was on the dev team.
