SEGA announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Special Stages would be making a return in Sonic Mania, and today the team has revealed “Blue Spheres,” which will be Bonus Stages, and Time Attack will feature in the game.
“Blue Spheres” sees players taking Sonic, Tails or Knuckles through a stage that will require deep concentration, as you navigate through it hitting blue spheres, but they turn red after touching them so be careful not to hit them again. Those who complete the bonus stage will be rewarded with Silver Medallions, and collecting all rings and spheres awards a Gold Medallion.
Special Stages will challenge you to hunt down enemy UFOs to obtain Chaos Emeralds. If you collect blue spheres throughout, you’ll give your character of choice a boost to their speed meter. Filling this increases your Mach level, so be careful not to fall off the stage at any point.
As for Time Attack, this new mode will bring the traditional method of players trying to compete with each other by completing stages in the fastest time to get onto the online leaderboard.
Sonic Mania will release on August 15th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. Standard and Limited Editions of the game are available here.
