Sonic Mania isn’t short of hidden secrets throughout the game, but there is one that is very well hidden, and may just be the best one of them all.
In case you missed it, Sega hosted a live stream last year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the blue blur, and to say it went badly would be an understatement. The stream was plagued by a consistent buzzing noise throughout, as well as other technical difficulties that made it a depressing failure for many viewers.
Said buzzing appears to have now made its way into the game, as Sega decide to take the opportunity to laugh at themselves by including the buzzing in the actual game. Whilst in the clip, which has been posted to Twitter, seems to have little significance, designer Brad Flick confirmed that this was indeed intentional, replying “You’re welcome, Sonic Fans” before tagging production engineer Hunter Bridges who had to apologize for the mishap last year.
There’s also a reference to Sonic’s birthday in the same clip, with the numbers “072216” appearing, or July 22nd, 2016 which marked the quarter of a century milestone for the fastest hedgehog alive. Fair play to Sega for taking such a disastrous event and making it into something for us to have a laugh at.
Sonic Mania is now available on consoles, bringing brand new acts plus remixes from the first three Sonic games, as well as Sonic & and Knuckles and Sonic CD.
