There are video games that pride themselves on being very difficult. However, there is a fine line between being difficult, and being frustratingly hard. For while gamers want a challenge, they want that challenge to be pure skill, forcing them to become better, and not a mechanic that is difficult to work around or be forced to do certain things instead of having freedom. This was one of the problems that the game SOMA had when it released in 2015, and fans made their thoughts very clear on it.
You see, SOMA is a horror/sci-fi adventure set in an underwater facility. Your mission was to figure out what happened, and then get out alive. A simple yet effective story, and one of the main gameplay mechanics was that you had to evade creatures that happened to be in the facility with you. This was the problem for many. Because it was very difficult to evade them, and it felt like they were on a hair trigger. So, fans made a mod to “fix” it, and then, the development team made an official “Safe Mode” to do the same thing.
This Safe Mode was given to the GOG and Xbox One version of the game, and now, via Twitter, the team has revealed that the PS4 now has Safe Mode. The only version that doesn’t have it is the Humble Bundle one. However, if you link the account to your Steam account, it will receive it.
So, what does Safe Mode do? Well, quite simply, it makes it so that all the monsters and creatures in the game are docile unless directly provoked. This makes it so that you can go through the story without having to dread what comes from the next room, which is what many players wanted.
If you’ve been waiting for this update on PS4, it’s here, so go see what the story has for you.
