SEGA Talks Bringing Dreamcast Games To Nintendo Switch
When the Nintendo Switch launched, there were a bunch of new titles revealed for the console, and it’s grown very much since then. However, there were also a bunch of ported titles brought over from the Wii U. And though questioned at first, this turned out to be a major victory for the Switch, as several of them sold over a million units. So now, people are wondering if games from other consoles could come to the Switch, including the SEGA Dreamcast.
At the Tokyo Game Show, a poll was given to fans to see what they wanted to see SEGA do next, and one of the biggest things was bringing Dreamcast games to the Nintendo Switch. So, in an interview, two of the team talked about this possibility:
M2 president Naoki Horii noted, “At the time, it seemed likely that we’d be able to emulate Dreamcast software on the Nintendo Switch. Depending on whether you’re emulating software or remaking the source code entirely, porting something is completely different. I think SEGA chose some of the titles based on that – no doubt emulation increased the number of titles they were able to choose from.”
Supervisor Yosuke Okunari: I think that this time the results of the survey influenced that as well. I haven’t really come to a conclusion yet, but I wonder if it’d be better to release more titles from the list in a manner similar to the Virtual Console (in their original state) or to hand-pick a select few with added features (like the Grantnoff boss in the 3DS version of Thunder Blade)…
While this isn’t confirmation that this will definitively happen, given the popularity and sales of the Switch, it’s very likely that they’ll at least attempt this. But when will we see the games? Not until next year at the very least.
