Sea of Thieves’ release is fast approaching, and it will present an outing not seen from the likes of Rare before, with it being an online shared world multiplayer title. For a deeper insight, the development team has conducted an interview with EDGE to talk about how their mindsets work compared to other developers, and how they want to work as a service.
Rare’s Ted Timmins stated:
As a creative, as long as you can put bread on the table and go home and afford to feed the family, then you just want as many people playing your games as possible. We want to be a successful service, and that is driven by the amount of people playing our game.
The interview also went into detail about their process, and what it takes to have a game in which nothing has to necessarily be cut out, whilst also not being at each other’s throats when coming up with ideas:
That’s the hardest thing [in a traditional game]. You literally sit in a room and argue for six hours sometimes, and you’ll go home shattered. Whereas for us, it’s like, ‘yeah, we can deliver that. We’ll make that a proper update, and it will be amazing.’ And instead of a six hour conversation, it’s a six minute one, and then you can all get back to working afterwards.
Sea of Thieves is set for release on March 20th on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Perhaps even more interestingly, the game will be a part of Xbox Game Pass, which will now be a service which offers Xbox exclusive launch titles from day one, including the likes of Crackdown 3 and State of Decay 2.
