Rocket League Dev Wants To Focus On Keeping Core Gameplay Fun
Rocket League is easily one of the most successful video games of the past few years. It rose from being a simple game on PlayStation 4 to one of the most popular video games going right now, despite it having come out years ago. One of the reasons for this is that developer Psyonix has worked hard to keep things fresh and fun for its players. New cars, new systems to play on, new ways to play with your friends in the game, etc. They’ve even refused to do a sequel because they feel they can do more here.
Yet, some have wondered whether the game could get some new game modes, push away from what Rocket League has at its core so that new stuff can be made. Well, in a post on Reddit, Game Director Corey Davis directly addressed that notion.
“We’re currently focusing on developing features aimed at the core Rocket League experience and not new game modes.”
Why? Well, they feel that the main “Soccar” mode is one that can be grown and expanded in fun and unique ways. Also, this is what a lot of people play every time they come into Rocket League:
From that perspective, we think the best way to keep the game fresh is to continue to build upon that core mode that’s made the game so replayable.
They’ve proven this notion before, and later this month they’re aiming to prove it again with the beta test for the Tournaments Mode. This mode will allow players to create tournaments with their friends and other players around the world to help determine who is the best. Furthermore, they’re “overhauling” the Progression System within the game to “make both casual and competitive Rocket League more rewarding.”
So in a way, they’re prescribing to the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” method of game design, and that seems just fine with us.
