Publicity Holding Back Diablo IV Reveal?
Blizzard is in a bit of hot water right now, as during their recent BlizzCon, they revealed Diablo Immortal to the world, and the world looked at it and said, “No.” They didn’t want that game, they wanted Diablo IV. Ever since this botched reveal, many have been diving into what Blizzard was thinking, what they were trying to do, and more. Kotaku wrote a report about what might be going on behind-the-scenes at Blizzard, and they surmise that it was another project that influenced the non-reveal, Titan.
Titan was supposed to be a “next-gen MMO”, but it all went wrong as Kotaku reminded people:
“In the beginning of 2013, after a long and protracted development cycle, Blizzard canceled Titan. Part of the team went on to make Overwatch, which would become a big success, but the project became a black eye for Blizzard — a massive sink of time and money that was also, much to some people’s dismay, public knowledge. Not only had they wasted resources on this failed game — everybody knew about it. Blizzard had acknowledged the project in 2008, and its existence had been frequently hinted and asked about in the years that followed.”
What does this have to do with Diablo IV? Easy, according to Kotaku, the failure of Titan still haunts them, and the last thing they’re wanting is to announce another major game, like Diablo IV, and then have it fail for one reason or another:
“The Diablo team is very paranoid about saying something too soon and then getting stuck in a loop. They don’t want to show the game until they have a trailer, a demo.”
The irony of course is that with the reveal of Diablo Immortal, they actually got themselves a media failure once more, for the game has been panned by those who have seen it and played it. It makes you wonder what they’re going to do next.
