PS4 Crosses 82 Million Units Sold
While the Nintendo Switch may be the hottest console on the market, Sony has been doing just as good with the PS4. In fact, the console is technically the best-selling console of the year, and that’s for many good reasons. And now, Sony has revealed their stats for the fourth quarter of 2017, and in it, they reveal that their system has now shipped over 82 million units. And given that they’re on the precipice of launching even more big games, that number is likely going to go up.
The released their full report online, you can see it here, but here’s an excerpt from it talking about profit:
As is shown in this slide, operating income in the same quarter of the previous
fiscal year included certain extraordinary items. Excluding those extraordinary
items, adjusted operating income would have increased 74.2 billion yen from the
120.8 billion yen that would have been recorded in the same quarter of the
previous fiscal year to 195.0 billion yen in the current quarter.
To be clear, shipped doesn’t mean sold, however, needing to ship that many all over the world is a very good sign, and when you compare it to the shipped numbers from the end of last quarter, that reveals that 3.2 million were shipped in the last three months.
Without a doubt, one of the biggest reasons for the uptick in shipping, though down from last year technically, is the release of God of War for PS4. The game had a lot of hype going into it, and it sold like hot cakes which no doubt drove up console sales.
In the very near future, another big title will release in the form of Spider-Man, made by Insomniac. That’s likely to drive up sales too, and Death Stranding, Last of Us Part II, Kingdom Hearts III and more are on the way as well.
