Console wars have been an important part of gaming culture for generations now, but as in all wars, there must be a winner (yes, we know some wars didn’t, roll with it!). And it’s clear that the latest console war between the Wii U, Xbox One and PS4 has a winner, and it’s Sony console. For not only has the system had numerous great games, but, it also has the biggest install base among the three. For Sony today revealed that the PlayStation 4 has reached an amazing 70 million units sold.
For the record, this is the latest data being used for this assessment, as this totals all units sold until December 3rd, 2017. This is impressive on numerous levels, including how the PS4 did this in a little over 4 years. Add to this, though there is a PlayStation 4 Pro, there is no “next system” currently announced for Sony, so these numbers will no doubt continue to rise.
This is a great bounce-back for Sony, who promptly didn’t do as well in the last console war between the Wii, Xbox 360 and the PS3. Launch issues, hardware issues, and gaming issues made the system not as desirable in the eyes of gamers, and the numbers reflected that. But here, with the PlayStation 4, it was viewed as the best hardware of the trio, and with games like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Final Fantasy XV, Uncharted: A Thief’s End, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and upcoming games like the returning God Of War, Spider-Man from Insomniac, Dreams, the massive lineup that’s on the PlayStation Store, and more, the system is still going to have plenty to play.
All that being said, Sony does need to keep their eyes forward towards the future. For with the arrival of the Nintendo Switch, Sony’s once dominant spot on top of the the console sales charts month-to-month has been challenged, including several months where the Switch outright won. We have no doubt they are contemplating the PS5, but the question is, when will we get it?
