PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Creator Talks Massive Chinese Playerbase
When a video game is a global hit, people become curious as to how much of a divide the player base for the game is. Is it popular in one hemisphere alone? Or does it have patches of players from all over? Recently, Steam revealed that half of the players on the service are of Chinese origin in one form or another. With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds being a major reason behind that. The number is absolutely staggering, and it’s even shocked PUBG creator Brendan Greene.
“I didn’t understand the scale of China when I first started this. The literal scale of the player base in China is crazy, it kind of blew me away.” he told Polygon.
However, though the number has been a surprise to some, it’s also brought forth a certain negative response from some players. This has caused slurs to be thrown at these players from all over. Greene is not happy with this and asks players to stop.
Of course, Greene has a lot on his plate right now with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, as the title just released its 1.0 version on Steam. Which is the official non-Early Access version of the game. That being said, Greene fully acknowledges that the title is far from being done, even likening it to Facebook in how it continues to improve over time:
“We look at this as moving into a permanent beta where we will continually upgrade and improve.”
And it’s a good thing too because version 1.0 has already been filled with requests to fix certain bugs. One of the big ones being rubberbanding. Greene notes that though there is no ETA for the fix, he promises it’s coming, but you have to give them a little time.
Any way you look at it, the game is a success in every metric, and whether it’s through China, the US, or somewhere in between, the game will continue to grow.
