Phil Spencer Talks Goals Of Next Xbox Platform
With E3 2018 now officially over, people are looking both back and forward to see who made the biggest impression, and who needs to make a change, and soon. For Xbox, people are in a bit of a mixed state. On one hand, they unveiled over 50 games that are going to come to the Xbox One. However, many of those games were multi-platform, and some “went to the well” too much in some peoples eyes. There was a tease of a new console coming though. And many are looking to Microsoft’s Phil Spencer for more on that.
During an interview with GiantBomb, Phil Spencer was asked specifically what he would want from the next Xbox. He replied in two parts:
“I think frame-rate is an area where consoles can do more, just in general. When you look at the balance between CPU and GPU in today’s consoles, they’re a little out of whack relative to what’s on the PC side. There’s work that we can do there.”
He went on,
“I’m always wishing games could start quicker. The problem we run into with making it manual for the developer is, one, they don’t really have all of the data they need, and what blocks to load in what order. And sometimes, games come in a little bit hot, so like, ‘hey what’s the install order’ may not be the [priority].”
All of these things are very interesting, but as many have noted, hardware performance hasn’t been Xbox’s problem. Rather, it’s been about bringing the software to the platform, and making sure that it was unique. As noted above, their E3 press conference was full of multi-platform titles, and though they have acquired some new studios, that won’t matter unless they bring AAA titles to their next system. Guess we’ll have to see what happens.
