Blizzard, rather out of the blue, announced that the 4K update for Overwatch was live for Xbox One X. The PS4 Pro version has been subjected to an update previously, though it remained at 1080p resolution with the exception of native 4K on the rendered menus. Naturally, this led Xbox One X owners fearful that their console would only receive the same treatment.
Minds were soon put at rest when Xbox Platform CVP Mike Ybarra tweeted out to confirm that the game is running on 4K resolution on the X, and won’t just apply to the interface. However, there was no confirmation on whether or not it was native 4K:
Yes, @PlayOverwatch runs at full 4k not just the UI. No idea how rumors like that start. @ww from Blizzard’s elite Overwatch team confirmed. Enjoy it because it’s epic! #Xbox
According to comparisons made by Digital Foundry, the game will run at native 4K thanks to dynamic scaling, meaning that the resolution decreases if there is a drop in frame rate. As exciting as this sounds, there are still a few issues for this version, with drops in frame rate and a peculiar tear at the top of the display.
Overwatch is now available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
