Overwatch League Will Have Its Finals In New York
When Blizzard announced the Overwatch League, there was a lot of wonder behind it. Many were curious to see if the planned esports league would actually work, especially since this wasn’t going to be a typical esports league. Rather, it would be like a physical sports league, one with teams and sponsors and guaranteed pay. Yet, the gamble worked, Overwatch fans from all over the world flooded to Twitch to watch the matches unfold before their very eyes. And now, the endgame is in sight.
Season 01 is still going strong, but the Overwatch League has revealed where the Grand Finals will be taken place, and when you can expect them.
“Following the end of the Overwatch League regular season on Sunday, June 17,” reads a press release, “the postseason will begin, with a field of six teams on Wednesday, July 11 at Blizzard Arena Los Angeles in Burbank, California. After the playoffs conclude, two finalists will take center stage in the Big Apple—at the home arena of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets—to battle for a share of the USD $1.4 million prize pool, the Overwatch League trophy, and a place in the history books.”
Many believe the Grand Finals will sell out Barclay’s center, which means that 19,000 Overwatch fans will be there to watch the final matches. This would make it the most watched Overwatch event in history.
As for how the Grand Finals winner will be decided, the winner will be the team to win two best-of-five series. Ensuring that whoever does win, they earned it.
Blizzard also promises that the playoffs and Grand Finals will host special on-site events that fans will enjoy, and it’s likely that those who attend will get special in-game rewards. Will you be watching the Grand Finals of the Overwatch League? Let us know in the comments below.
