Blizzard has no doubt had many, many ideas for heroes for Overwatch since it has launched, with only a handful of said ideas making the cut into the main roster. One of the more interesting characters that surprisingly didn’t make the grade was Jetpack Cat.
This was revealed earlier in the year by game director Jeff Kaplan, who in an interview stated that although it was a more than popular idea among the team, it was understandably considered to be “too ridiculous” to make its way into the shooter.
Blizzcon has recently taken place, where Kaplan and Arnold Tsang, the lead character concept artist, showed off some of the earlier concept ideas for Overwatch. It was revealed that Jetpack Cat was an idea being kicked around even as far back as when the team were working on the now canceled MMO, Titan. Kaplan also said that although it was a hilarious choice to bring into Overwatch, it felt like the team was “slipping out of the universe” that they were creating.
One idea for the cat was to be a cartoon style of design with a more heroic trait, whereas another was more of a lazy version who rather amusingly used his jetpack as a mobile recliner.
Overwatch is now available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
