Overwatch Creative Director Doesn’t Think Game Is Ready For “Role Queues”
There is a danger when it comes to team multiplayer games that feature character classes. Since most games let players choose their own characters, it can often imbalance the team. Even in a game like Overwatch, where players can swap out characters on the fly, it can still have unbalanced teams. As such, gamers have been asking Blizzard for the chance to create “Role Queues” when making teams. Which basically means if a team feels they need a Tank, they can ask for one, and wait for such a player to arrive.
This seems like a decent idea, however, there is a lot of work behind the scenes that isn’t calculated when suggested an idea like this. And Overwatch Creative Director Jeff Kaplan doesn’t think that this idea is ready for the main game just yet:
“There’s two versions the community has proposed, and neither is fully satisfactory to me,” said Kaplan in an interview with Kotaku. “One is the honor system version where I queue up as a tank, but actually I want to play McCree, and the game lets me do that since Overwatch is very much about fluidly responding to the enemy team’s composition. The other version is that it locks you in. I think that also hurts the spirit of the game.”
What is Kaplan’s solution? Well, he feels it would be best to find a way to make pre-made groups instead of going for a Role Queue. This way, players know they’re playing with, and more than likely can respond better with one another rather than just trying to fill out their team. He did note that it is something Blizzard is working on, but didn’t give much more than that.
So, if you’re looking for that Role Queue option, it appears you’ll be waiting for some time.
