Overkill’s The Walking Dead Has Been Shut Down
The last six months has not been kind to The Walking Dead franchise. The TV series lost several key actors and actresses, and more are said to be leaving soon. Some believe the comic is truly losing steam despite its massive popularity. TellTale Games, who was making their own Walking Dead series, shut down, and then Overkill’s The Walking Dead came onto PC and basically flopped. Which lead many to believe that the console version wasn’t going to come out. And they were right.
Despite the team saying that the console version was still on track, Skybound Games has come out and said that they have indeed been terminated, and that no further work will go into them:
“As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on OVERKILL’S THE WALKING DEAD,” Skybound said in a statement. “Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional Co-op Action FPS.
They went on:
We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately OVERKILL’S THE WALKING DEAD did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised. We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.”
There’s a ton of irony in this, not the least of which is that the game was hyped up heavily through some very detailed and beautiful trailers. But, when the game came out, the details and content just didn’t live up to the hype. And, launching on PC first instead of a simultaneous launch definitely hurt it.
