Nintendo seems to support the idea of cross-platform play
Rocket League will soon be coming to the Nintendo Switch along with some epic news. Nintendo will support the ability to play online against players from other platforms such as the Xbox One or PC. The game’s creators, Psyonix, seem to have been counting on this feature from the beginning and Nintendo did not hesitate a moment to offer this possibility to give players a better experience.
Rocket League is just one of many games that would do well with such cross-play capability, and there are a lot of other titles that will hopefully benefit from Nintendo’s open-minded approach. Some feared that games like Rocket League would cost more to get for the Switch, but in fact, it was hinted to be sold for the exact same price as other platforms. Cross-platform play is a crucial part of multiplayer gaming, and while some game developers choose to separate players from various platforms, there are others that want to see everyone playing together.
For a while now, there have been numerous MMOs and multiplayer games arriving on consoles and these evidently work the best when cross-play is supported. As the Nintendo Switch is still relatively young, not many actual MMOs have been revealed for the console. It is probably just a matter of time, till we get to see all those console MMOs receiving Switch ports. In an interview, Charlie Scibetta told Venturebeat when talking about Rocket League, “We want people to have a good time. In the case of Rocket League, if that’s what the people like yourself — you just said you love that game and you want to be able to play cross platform…”.
Hopefully, Nintendo will stick to this diplomatic mindset, and we will get to see a ton of cross-platform play between consoles and PC.
