Nintendo Of America President Doesn’t See Other Consoles As Competition
For the last 19 months, the console known as the Switch has been doing incredibly well on the market. True, the PS4 has been topping the charts a lot since the Switch’s arrival, but the Switch is right behind it, and ahead of it in other ways. In 19 months, the Switch has sold over 20 million consoles, and with Super Smash Bros and Pokemon Let’s Go coming to the system soon, those numbers are sure to shoot up. To some, it would seem that Nintendo has a leg up on their competition. But that’s not how they see it.
For Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime gave a speech at the 2018 Geek Summit, and noted this:
“That’s what I compete for, minute by minute. That time you spend surfing the Web, watching a movie, watching a telecast of a conference: that’s all entertainment time we’re competing for. My competitive set is much bigger than my direct competitors in Sony and Microsoft. I compete for time. When I do that, I have to be creative and innovative in order to win that battle.”
For him, and the company, they aren’t fully concerned about what the other companies in Microsoft and Sony are doing. They’re determined to create their own path into the future:
“Nintendo’s approach is to do things differently. We have a much different suite of experiences than our competitors offer, and we do that in a different way. This creates a sort of yin and yang for our consumers. They’re excited about cloud saves and legacy content but wish we might deliver voice chat a different way, for example,” he explained.
Reggie noted how the Switch is being played everywhere due to its mobility, and that’s what they love seeing, as everyone is playing it whenever they can. And if they continue to grow and innovate, their success is assured.
