So, 2017 was a major year for video games. Two new consoles released, many high-profile titles shook the world (for better and for worse), and when all was said and done, we know what ones really made an impact. One such game was NieR: Automata, an RPG adventure by Platinum Games. For many, this was one of the top games of last year, and more than that, it saved Platinum Games as a studio, for they were on the rebound after the Microsoft debacle of Scalebound.
When awards season came out, many felt NieR: Automata deserved many awards, and yet, they didn’t receive as many as you might think, or at the very least, not in the categories you would expect. Part of this was because of competition to be fair, including games like Persona 5 and Breath of the Wild, among others. However, during the DICE Awards, the game was nominated, and won, RPG of the Year, a true honor. But…no one from Square Enix or Platinum Games showed up to claim the award!
So…yeah, that was a twist, don’t you think? Many are curious as to why this happened, or didn’t happen. After all, it’s common practice to reveal (during video game award shows like this) to the winning company that they will get the award so that they can know who to send up, what to say, etc. And it’s very likely that it happened here, so why didn’t Square Enix or Platinum Games show?
There are a lot of possible reasons, one of them simply could be that no one was available to accept the award. Or, they felt they didn’t need to accept it, as the award itself was enough of an honor. No one knows…yet.
It is good to see NieR: Automata win Best RPG, and with a sequel in the works, we hope that it gets recognized when it releases.
