Nier: Automata Has Shipped Over 2.5 Million Units
It’s always a gamble putting all your hopes on one thing. But last year, that’s exactly what Platinum Games did with their RPG Nier: Automata. Though the game has had numerous successes over the years, they were burned in 2016 when their title Scalebound, which they had spent a lot of time and money on, was shelved by Microsoft. As such, Nier was all they had left, and they needed it to do well in order to survive. Thankfully, it did, and it continues to do so. For a little after its one year anniversary, it crossed a new milestone.
According to the official Nier: Automata Twitter feed, the game has officially shipped 2.5 million units worldwide. It was around two million shipped last September, which means demand for the game is still very high. Now, yes, “shipped” doesn’t mean sold, but you don’t ship more games if no one is buying them.
The success of Nier was actually one of the biggest surprises of last year. After all, it was a sequel to a game that very few people actually knew about. So this was a big gamble just making it. Yet, true to Platinum Games style, they infused the game with a life and style all its own. Featuring a complex story about life and death, music that was both beautiful and haunting (in the good way), visuals that were stunning, and gameplay that was lots of fun. And there’s already been confirmation of a sequel in the works, which will surely make people happy.
The best part? Square Enix and Platinum are planning some special fan events to help celebrate the game’s anniversary. So stay tuned for that.
Oh, and if you’re looking for even more from the game, there’s apparently a final ending that no one has discovered quite yet.
