Next Phase of Zombie Games Could be the Best Yet
The zombie genre of games has grown into one of the most popular of all. Gunning down mindless beings while trying to survive, with a dose of horror thrown in for good measure, appeals to many gamers. The games spread across all formats like the very plagues which are fabled to cause the zombie apocalypses, from Playstations to arcades and online casinos.
Starting off 2018, there’s been somewhat of a break from zombie video games. Luckily, there’s a new age of these walker-hunting, survive-at-all-costs games on the way.
Founders of a genre
Back in the nineties, The House of the Dead became an arcade must-play, with the Resident Evil franchise appeasing console players. But, by far the best games of the zombie genre came since the turn of the millennium. Hailed as one of the greatest games of all time, The Last of Us took the world by storm in 2013. Simply put, it’s the complete package. Then came Dying Light in 2015, which combined zombie survival, terrifying night time action, and the ability to parkour.
Along with these premier titles, some smaller releases have become incredibly popular. State of Decay was originally released to the Xbox Live Arcade, but its unique survival gameplay quickly made it one of Xbox’s biggest exclusives. Lost Vegas was also a quiet release. Created by Microgaming, the online casino game allows players to play as both humans and zombies, making it quite unique. On top of this, as detailed by Lost Vegas features list, it features 243 ways to win.
A new age is dawning
In 2018, the world is set to be, once again, engulfed by zombie games. One of the most anticipated releases is State of Decay 2. One of the few flaws of the first game, to some, was the lack of co-op play. So, the creators have enabled co-op on State of Decay 2. Overkill’s The Walking Dead is based on the comics that inspired the television series and will have a virtual reality mode.
Also to come this year is World War Z, Metal Gear Survive, and potentially The Last of Us Part II. 2018 and 2019 are set to reignite the zombie game genre with some incredible titles that explore the theme in newer, more exciting ways.
