Jordan Vogt-Roberts Pitches Legend Of Zelda Film Idea
Video games and movies don’t exactly have the best record together. There have been many attempts to bring video game properties to the big screen, but for every Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, there’s a Bloodrayne, Prince of Persia, and of course, Super Mario Bros. But, Hollywood isn’t giving up. In fact, one of the video game movies being made right now apparently is one based off of Metal Gear. And the director of the film, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, wants to make a Legend of Zelda movie too.
While doing a talk with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, the director noted many things about his vision for a Legend Of Zelda film. Including remembering what it is, and what it isn’t.
“The thing about Zelda is Zelda is not Lord of the Rings, right? You cannot forget how quirky and bizarre Zelda is. I think you need to find a way to actually fuse the traditional Zelda and the very new Zelda.”
He explained this idea of “fusion” even more:
“I think you have to find a way to very intensely fuse the pure just sort of fantasy of The Ocarina of Time and The Link to the Past, but then I think you need to find a way to incorporate the newer pseudo-tech stuff — you know, the lasers and Tron lines that happen in the newer games, but in a way that’s not overwhelming.”
It certainly sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, even if he didn’t name Breath of the Wild as the “newer games” that had the tech he noted. Regardless, a movie could potentially work if done the right way. And Nintendo has been wanting to expand their IP into new and interesting places. So, could a movie be next for Legend of Zelda?
Oh, and he also notes that Link shouldn’t talk for the whole movie. That’s accurate.
