As we’ve noted over the last several months, the Nintendo Switch is the hottest console on the market right now. It may not always be the best-selling, but it’s always selling out, and that has helped propel Nintendo back to the heights that they had during the Wii era. A big reason for this success was the multitude of 1st party games that came out during its first nine months. But this year, the games haven’t been as frequent, and some are getting very worried about it.
This includes analyst Atul Goyal, who is one of Nintendo’s biggest supporters on the Wall Street market. He spoke about how he feels the Nintendo Switch will still do ok, but it won’t meet its sales goal this year because of its lack of major 1st party titles before the end of the year.
Mainly, there are three titles in Super Mario Party, Pokemon Let’s Go, and Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but that’s it.
“Market expectations for Switch, as reflected in stock price, have turned from robust growth to no-growth in a matter of three months,” Goyal said. “We believe continued sales of Switch over the course of this year and next could very well prove this current thesis of Switch being ex- growth wrong as well. But given the sustained selling pressure, perhaps the short-term market is right about Nintendo (for a change) and perhaps it doesn’t grow in hardware sales,” he explained.
It’s true, Nintendo hasn’t been delivering the big 1st party games consistently this year. The last big one was Mario Tennis Aces in June, and Super Mario Party doesn’t arrive until August, that’s three months of no 1st party titles. And not everyone is excited for Mario Party and Pokemon Let’s Go, so that could affect things as well.
Still, Nintendo is holding on the cards in terms of reveals, and so we shouldn’t guess their intentions, but rather wait to see what they reveal next.
