When the original Injustice: Gods Among Us was announced, fans were rightfully cautious. Sure, the game looked cool (the trailer was really cool), but, the team behind the game, NetherRealm studios, had kinda/sorts done this before with DC Comics vs. Mortal Kombat. And…it was very mixed in reception. Thankfully, the game turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the year, and even led to a very successful comic book series. So, naturally, Injustice 2 was made, and now it’s getting the praise it deserves.
IGN has been revealing their “Best of” awards for a while now, and when it came to fighting games, Injustice 2 made the top to win the awards. For the record, this is a true honor not just because of the site giving the award, but also, there was a LOT of good competition this year in terms of fighting games. We’re talking titles like Tekken 7, ARMS, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, Pokken Tournament DX, and more were all nominated for the award, but Injustice 2 came out on top.
It’s not hard to see why, as the game improves on what the original did in many ways. It refined the combat even more, which was already really good. It brought an even greater scope of characters to the mix for both DC Comics and the Mortal Kombat universe. And then, it surprised everyone by bringing in other universes to the mix, adding characters like Hellboy and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Even the storyline got an upgrade via the visuals and the content. For now, it wasn’t a “crisis” storyline, it focused solely on the characters from the Injustice Earth as they had to deal with the threat that is Brainiac.
All in all, Injustice 2 earns the honor of being the best fighting game of the year, and we’d be very surprised if Injustice 3 wasn’t on its way.
