How Hard Are Tanks Getting Nerfed In SWTOR’s 5.9 Update?
Tanks are a tricky class to balance in all types of games, be it MMORPGs, MOBAs, and so on. You have to make a character be able to take a lot of damage, but also be able to deal a bit of damage so you don’t get bored while you’re playing. Now, that tiny bit of damage can sometimes turn into a lot of damage with right items and setups. Something like that is happening in SWTOR, where tanks seem to be indestructible, but they also have the power to bash your face in.
The upcoming 5.9 update for Star Wars: The Old Republic aims to change up certain things about Tanks, as they are currently dominating in PvP, especially certain types of tanks called “skank tanks”. A skank tank is a character that uses a Tank Discipline but has DPS gear equipped. This means that they can take a lot more punishment than regular characters and classes, but they are also able to deal a lot of damage. So, how are the developers going to fix this problem? You can’t reduce a tank’s damage too much, as then they literally just have to stand in one place and soak up damage, and there isn’t much interactive gameplay there. Well, Eric Musco, the Community Manager, made a post where he stated that they intend to lower the damage of tanks by a tiny bit, but they will in return increase their overall threat generation, which should make them a bit more balanced.
I played a tank in SWTOR for five years.
I had all the right gear and even tried skank-tank build. However, I still got stomped easily and regularly in PvP on account of “tank-tunneling”. Don’t be fooled! SWTOR players know how to burn a tank down fast!
This tank nerfing is a bad response to a non-problem/fake problem generated by in-game trolls who either don’t know about tank-tunneling (very unlikely) or are simply lying to the devs to get a class-breaking response (most likely).
i play true tank and i am pissed. its hard enough when you get burned by mercs and snipers. nerf the scum mercs.
I’m quitting SWTOR because of this nerf. Going back to playing my Berserker in EQ2. The devs in this game have succeeded in completely destroying the two things I cared about the most in back-to-back patches: Conquest and Tanking. Time to stop drinking the Kool-Aid.
