Here’s Why Danny Devito Isn’t Detective Pikachu
So when Detective Pikachu the game was first released in Japan, it got a lot of attention. Then, when it came to the West, it got even more looks, and not all of them were ecstatic ones. This was a rather weird Pokemon offshoot, and in the Western version of the game, the Pikachu in question reminded a lot of people of Danny Devito via his attitude and voice. So, when a live-action movie of the game was announced, many hoped that Devito would get to be the main character. But Ryan Reynolds got it instead.
Some of the team behind Detective Pikachu talked with Game Informer, and revealed that they honestly did consider Danny Devito for the role because of the fans:
“We definitely thought about it and how it might inform the spirit of it. Danny is incredible by the way. I am a huge fan of Danny DeVito. It was really very funny, so I couldn’t speak to all the reasons why it wasn’t Danny DeVito cast. I love Danny and some point maybe after the movie comes about, we can share those early tests. It’s absolutely hilarious.”
They went on:
“I can’t give away too much, but in terms of where the story goes and how it evolves, we had to sort of look at everything, including what fans weren’t seeing yet to make the decision. But that spirit of Danny DeVito, I promise you, is still inside of Pikachu.”
So as you can see, there was some consideration on the team’s part to hear out the fans and see what they got, and what they got was hilarious, just not what they were looking for in the movie. Which happens more than you might think actually.
We’ll just have to see what people think of the film when it releases soon.
