God Of War Director Ok With Last Of Us Comparisons
Because there are so many video games out there, it’s very rare for one to come along that is incredibly unique, or for one to have a fully unique story. As such, when a major title comes out, it’s not hard for it to be compared to another game. April’s big hit was the sequel/reboot of God of War, which not only earned the praise of critics everywhere, but has already sold 5 million copies in its first month of release. So, what are some people comparing it to? The Last Of Us.
Ironically though, God of War Director Cory Barlog told Gamingbolt that some people are using it as an insult instead of praise:
“The thing with The Last of Us, is, for me, I think a lot of people mean it as a dig, which I’ve never really understood. Like, “oh, you’re just doing your own Last of Us”, so, o-Kay. One, I am incredibly inspired by Neil and his team, they are absolutely otherworldly with their abilities and how talented they are and how much they bring to and elevate the medium.
It is easy to see how you can compare the two. Both have a story that is depth and relies on the two main characters. They have a father-child relationship, which in God of War’s case is literal, and both of them have a mission they must complete. But, there are also tons of differences, ones that may have made you not think of comparing the two, and that’s why Barlog isn’t afraid of the insults:
“I think we’re all inspired by each other. We’re all riffing on each other. At the end of the day, every one of us is ripping off stories from the Greeks and from the Bard, and from everything. There’s nothing new, even “new” is inspired by something.”
