Fortnite Dominates Nintendo eShop Downloads For 2018

2018 is very nearly in the books, and for another solid year of gaming, there were some surprises and trends that no one really saw coming. One of which was that the digital marketplace via Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, and the Nintendo eShop grew in terms of users and buyers by a substantial amount. Digital sales have rarely, if ever, been higher. And then, there was the rise of a little game called Fortnite, which dominated the year, and is poised for a massive 2019.

One of the biggest reasons for the game’s success though was that Epic Games made sure that Fortnite was on every possible platform it could be on. And this included the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo on their news app revealed the top 30 downloaded games on the eShop, and Fortnite was No.1:

1. Fortnite
2. Fallout Shelter
3. Paladins
4. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
5. Warframe
6. Arena of Valor
7. Minecraft
8. Hollow Knight
9. Super Mario Party
10. Celeste
11. Mario Tennis Aces
12. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee
13. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu
14. Dead Cells
15. Overcooked! 2
16. Octopath Traveler
17. Undertale
18. Kirby Star Allies
19. Diablo III: Eternal Collection
20. Wizard of Legend
21. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
22. Okami HD
23. Darkest Dungeon
24. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
25. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
26. Golf Story

Obviously, a big reason for this was that the game was free to download, and that led to it getting 2 million downloads in a single day. But, it’s good to see that it maintained that amount of downloads because it had some stiff competition. Including Super Smash Bros Ultimate, which somehow got to No.4 on the list despite only being out a small amount of time before this was all calculated.

There were also some very big indie games on the list, including Celeste and Hollow Knight. How many of these games did you personally download? Let us know in the comments below.
