Former GTA IV Dev Notes Bad Working Atmosphere At Rockstar Games
Rockstar Games is on the precipice of releasing one of the biggest and most anticipated games of the year via Red Dead Redemption 2. However, despite all the hype for the game, a recent interview Vulture has proven to be a bit of a problem for them. For one of the heads of Rockstar openly admitted that the team had to work 100-hour weeks at times to get the game done. This sent a wave of backlash throughout the gaming community, as it seemed wrong in the eyes of gamers. And now, a former member of the GTA IV team has shed even more light on the situation.
On Twitter, he noted two things that happened to him during his time at Rockstar, and it doesn’t paint a pretty picture of what their practices were:
“It’s been nearly a decade since I parted from Rockstar, but I can assure you that during the GTA IV era, it was like working with a gun to your head 7 days a week. “Be here Saturday & Sunday too, just in case Sam or Dan come in, they want to see everyone working as hard as them.””
But wait, there’s more. And this one is arguably much more offensive:
“There was an instance in 08 or 09 when I legitimately had THE FLU. Needed a day off. Went to Drx, got an Rx for Tamiflu, had an allergic reaction, tweeted a photo, then got put on notice for not coming in to work and ‘fooling around on twitter’ instead. True story. F*****g crazy.”
This seems to be in conflict with the response that Rockstar Games gave in regards to the 100-hour work weeks. Furthermore, it could be that Rockstar isn’t as open as they would like us to believe, and that current members of the staff aren’t speaking out because of fear for their jobs.
