Final Fantasy XV is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of recent years, as well as one of the best entries in the esteemed Final Fantasy XV series. So, it’s not surprising that Square Enix has been doing its best to expand the reach of the game. They started out on PS4 and Xbox One, they’re getting ready to release the PC version of the game (link above), and now, they’re released Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, the mobile version of the game.
Now, usually, when a title goes “mobile” they sacrifice quite a lot to do so. Major gameplay elements, major story beats, etc. But, in a nice twist, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition doesn’t do that as much as you think. There’s honestly only two real scaledowns here. First is obvious, the graphics. They’ve gone full chibi, which is ok given that this is mobile and there’s no way they would’ve been able to pack all the details on phones without issues.
The second is gameplay, it much more mobile style of gameplay isn’t of the freeform battle style that you got to enjoy in the console version. Everything else is pretty much the same content wise. The story is all there, it’s just broken up into playable chapters (more on that in a sec). You still get to roam around, see all the characters, and everything else that made XV such a great Final Fantasy title.
There is a catch. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition gives you Chapter 1 for free, but every chapter after that you have to pay for. However, this may be a secret boon, for if you decide you don’t like the game, you don’t have to spend another dime on it.
The game is available now for Android and iOS, so if you’re interested, try it out.
