While it’s true that shooters don’t have to have the deepest story, as long as they have the gameplay to make it fun, it is intriguing to see what kind of story the game will have if its done right. For the Far Cry series, they’ve always flirted with either having a big story, or letting the gameplay drive it. In Far Cry 5, it’s clear that they want this story to stand out in the minds of its players. Thus, we’re going to not only team up with people, we’re going to learn more about them.
Ubisoft released many videos of the voice actors behind their characters. One of them is Steve Byers, who voices Nick Rye in Far Cry 5. In the interview, he reveals who Nick really is, and shows that the game is really going to show off the characters.
For Nick, he was born and raised in Montana, he’s a “lifer” there. Because of that, he felt that his life was set, and he only needed to do so much in order to live it out.
But, when a cult comes in, in the form of Eden’s Gate, and takes over the county, Nick feels that his destiny isn’t in doing nothing, it’s in doing something to stop them. Thus, he gets a plane, and is ready to team up with the Resistance in order to take them down and protect his home.
Nick will indeed be your wingman of sorts in the game. You can use his plane to call in strafes and bomb strikes on targets you deem worthy. Or, as shown in the interview video, you can be a part of some epic aerial dogfights.
Either way, Nick is just one member of the Resistance that you’ll meet in Far Cry 5. Who will you work with to stop Eden’s Gate? You’ll find out on March 27th.
