Open-world games are intended to push things in terms of gameplay and story. Often because players have the freedom to do what they want, when they want, however they want, within reason of course. The Far Cry series has been open-world for a long time, but with the upcoming Far Cry 5, the team at Ubisoft are going far beyond what they’ve done before. So much so that even they can’t tell how players are going to interact with the world, or how the world will interact with players.
In a special video interview, some of the team talked about the game and how it would affect players play. This is apparently one of the most popular questions the team gets asked, and they note that they truly don’t know how the game will affect players because “the game is organic, it pushes back on its own.”
This is a true sign of open-world gameplay, but it goes far beyond that. The Ubisoft team wanted to make sure the world was populated and full of life in a way never done before. To that end, they actually went to Montana to get real pictures of the landscape and model that into the game. It didn’t stop there though. The game will apparently feature well over 65 unique characters to meet. This is a vast jump over previous Far Cry games.
As the developer notes, every character has a purpose, has an opinion, and wants to help in your struggle to free Hope County.
There’s also going to be a ton of wildlife native to Montana in the game, one of which, the wolverine, actually scares one of the developer, it’s actually rather funny.
The two also talk about co-op and the freedom you have in it. One person can be driving in a car while another can go and fly in a plane above, it’s incredibly liberating.
Far Cry 5 is set to arrive on March 27th.
