Epic Games Buy Fall Guys Devs Studio
Epic Games bought the Tonic Games Group, the parent company of developer Mediatonic that made the megahit Fall Guys.
Another dev studio swallowed by a gaming giant
It’s always the same story in these cases. The games won’t suffer, development stays the same, and the developers just get more options as they have more cash, that’s what the official statements always say. Doesn’t sound that bad in theory. But, the world doesn’t work like that. In practice, it doesn’t take long before you see the influence of the larger company on the smaller dev studio.
Fall Guys can’t get that different. Or can it? Epic Games hit the goldmine with Fortnite. It’s a game that earns stupid amounts of cash each year. What’s the secret?
Fall Guys may go free-to-play
This makes the most sense. A cute, goofy, but also competitive title like Fall Guys would be perfect for Fortnite’s business model. Everyone can play it, but if you want all the trendy cosmetics and emotes and whatnot you pay a bit.
Kids need to get all the cool new cosmetics. Epic Games mastered this free-to-play monetization model, and I have a hunch Fall Guys is going down that road as well now.
